The BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutrition Progarm is part of ActNow BC. ActNow is a healthy initiative that works together with government ministries, the health sector and private partners to deliver programs and services that encourage healthy choices for all British Columbians.
Did you know only 20% - 25% of children eat the recommenced daily minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables?
The School Fruit and Vegetable Nutrition Program is designed to increase consumption of local fruits and vegetables and to increase awareness. Approximately every two weeks a different fruit or vegetable selection is delivered to the school to be available for students in classrooms. So far this year we have had prune plums, pears and grape tomatoes.

More School Programs:
12:00 Playtime, 12:30 Lunch
Beginning this year we have altered our lunch-time schedule to allow students 30 minutes of playtime, followed by a 15 minute nutrition break. At 12:45 teachers return to classrooms and begin instruction. In most cases, teachers allow students a few extra minutes to finish eating if required.
We have found this arrangement allows students to eat their lunch at a more relaxed pace, as they're not rushing to get outside for playtime.
Bulldogs in the Classroom
Our school is very fortunate to have #7 Frank Ridell and #20 Jesse Halikas working in our school two mornings each week. Frank and Jesse visit classrooms, and assist with schools programs such as the Breakfast Club, Floor Hockey and Run for Fun. The bulldogs are excellent role models for our students and are a terrific addition to our school community.
Guided Reading
Our school-wide guided reading program allows students to improve thier reading success by placing them in reading groups appropriate to their reading level. As they gain skill and confidence, they progress through the levels.
Gotcha's
Students who are "caught being good" are given a "gotcha". Each gotcha goes into a draw for prizes given out (2 per class) at the end of each week.
Home Reading
Home reading folders are provided for students to take home. It is hoped students will bring their folders home each night and that parents will encourage their children to read at home on a regular basis.
Lunch Program
School District #70 offers a lunch program at our school. This program provides healthy snacks and lunches for students who wish to participate. The cost is $50 per student per month, or whatever the family can afford. Consent and payment envelopes are sent home at the beginning of each month, along with the menu. For more information about the program, please feel free to contact Mrs. LaRochelle at the school.
Run For Fun
As part of our Healthy Schools initiative to encourage healthy habits, each day the entire school will run on nice days or do a daily program in the classroom or gym on rainy days. If you would like to join our run we will start from the 9th Avenue side of the school at 11:50 daily.
Spirit Days
To encourage school spirit, The first Friday of each month will be Spirit Day. Our first Spirit Day in September was "School Colours" day, followed by hat day, crazy hair day, pajama day, etc. The spirit day themes will be announced as they come closer each month.
Virtues
The Virtues Project provides opportunities to help shape character by creating a positive, empowering culture and environment in which our students can learn and grow. Each month we highlight one or two virtues. Some examples of virtues we will be working on include kindness, cleanliness, responsibility, helpfulness, etc.
After School Club
The after school club provides an opportunity for students to stay after school and take part in a variety of activities inside and outside the school. The program is designed for students who would normally go home to an empty house or be looked after by siblings when school gets out. This program is run by the Alberni Community School, and there is a minimal charge. For more information please contact Cathy Cross at 723-5603 or email ccross@sd70.bc.ca.
